Chapter Ten

She filled his senses with her beauty and sweetness. Hair, soft as rabbit fur, tickled his cheek. Lips, swollen from a night of passion, pressed against his neck, her warm breath caressing his skin as she slept.

She shifted, burrowing closer against him and sighed with the pleasurable memories of their lovemaking.

Duke's arms tightened. Soon his work would be finished in this town, and he would have to leave. A pang of regret tightened in his chest. He'd known many women, not all in the Biblical sense, but certainly he'd had his choice. He loved women, not individually, but as a group, and he'd never been tempted to settle down with just one.

Until now.

He rubbed his face against her silky spun-gold hair. He had no doubt he would tire of her eventually. No woman held his interest long. He didn't trust females any more than he trusted a coiled rattlesnake.

But this particular woman had somehow slipped through his defenses. He wouldn't mind spending a few more nights with her. Hell, he wouldn't even mind spending a few more days with her, and that was something he'd never felt about a woman before.

It wasn't like he was tempted to stay with her forever. There was no chance of that. Their lifestyles were too different. She was rooted in this small town, and he had never known a real home. Nor did he want one. He was perfectly satisfied with things the way they were. And that didn't include a permanent female.

Duke King had no room in his life for a woman. Other men might make fools of themselves, but he would never fall in love. No woman would ever hurt him. And he made sure that would never happen by always leaving, before his heart got involved. He'd been shot a half-dozen times, dragged by a horse, stabbed and left for dead. His body had taken every sort of punishment and abuse imaginable ... but his heart had never been touched.

The woman moved again, and Duke kissed the top of her head. Yes, it was time to move on. This lady was more dangerous than any villain he'd ever faced. Her weapons were sheathed in velvety soft skin and warm, gentle eyes.

Duke looked down at her peacefully sleeping form. Memories of their lovemaking aroused him, and he knew he couldn't leave without one more kiss. Just one more. Then he'd be on his way out of town and out of her life . . . forever.

He lifted her chin and let his mouth gently touch her lips. They responded instantly, warming to his kiss and responding with a passion that swept thoughts of leaving out of his mind. All he wanted was to kiss her and...

Matt woke up with a start, shocked to discover that Jamie’s face was only inches from his. He pulled back and looked down at her. She was sound asleep and had no idea how close she had been to becoming part of his dream.

Sometime during the night, they had rolled together, meeting on the neutral ground in the middle of the tent.
